Sunil Bharti Mittal

Now, after a decade long tryst with the telecom sector, Mittal has kept himself away from the day to day operations of Airtel and has set his eyes on new horizons, utilising the core competence of the group in services delivery. And he is dedicating his energies towards other greenfi eld businesses like fresh food exports, retail & insurance sectors. One brother Rajan (Joint MD, Bharti Airtel) is taking care of the telecom business while Rakesh (Director, Bharti Airtel) is handling the FieldFresh Foods venture. Recently on November 27, Bharti has signed a landmark MoU with global retailing giant Wal-Mart, and the two aim to explore retailing opportunities in India jointly. Now the Bhartis are well set to revolutionise retail & agriculture sectors just the way they ushered in the telecom revolution in India.

GHANSHYAM DAS BIRLA – INDUSTRIALIST, VISIONARY & AN IDEALIST

During the freedom movement, business and profit were largely considered taboo words. A large number of Indians emulated the beliefs of the Mahatma to the core. And in the midst of this environment arose Ghanshyam Das Birla – a man who thought the spirit of enterprise were necessary for the nation to prosper. His unflinching ability to see beyond his time made him immensely powerful and influential. More than a mere capitalist, as one might call him today, he was a visionary who worked tirelessly for the benefit of the society as a whole.

The marketing battlefield

Elections are today nothing but marketing warfares! The mid-term election held in USA in November 2006 has been the bloodiest marketing battlefield. The media was splurged with ads of all kinds. According to Nielson Media Research, American TV viewers were exposed to around a million political ads between August and October this year. Compared to the last mid-term elections, there was a 31% increase in advertisements.

Historically, America has always had a very low voter turn-out. As is the case everywhere, people don’t believe it’s important to vote, and don’t take it seriously. This time around, America went all out to reverse this trend. All possible marketing gimmicks were used to make the voter come out and cast his ballot.

Godrej Group was established by Ardeshir Godrej in 1897

The company is headed by Adi Godrej who has further led the company at the helm and has set a benchmark. According to N.B. The group has acquired brands such as Fiskars, Jet and Banish and has alliances with organisations such as GE, P&G, Pillsbury, and Sara Lee.

But the ordeal was far from over. That cruel temptress we call fate had yet to deliver the coup d’état. The onset of the Second World War saw the city (by then bearing the moniker of Leningrad) hang on grimly to dear life as the Nazis laid siege for 900 days, and the Fuehrer’s blockade saw nearly 650,000 die of hunger, with more than 17,000 blown away by the air raids and arbitrary gunfire. And I haven’t even mentioned the countless thousands who died of what could be a lexicon of diseases. All of this remains a forgotten footnote in history, buried under layers of forgotten memories. “And why should we remember it, sir? What's that saying... let bygones be bygones?” For the first time I noticed a tinge of displeasure in my feisty friend’s tone and, knowing I had touched a raw nerve, dropped the topic altogether.
