So, what will be the key to survive in this ad mad radio world? “Differentiation,” says Rana Barua, National Head Marketing, Radio City. But how, when all they have on offer is the same music, RJ’s and of course ads (which they can’t help)? “Most of the channels will want to jump on the biggest category (Bollywood chartbusters),which will result in some channels flopping, then reinventing themselves and finally evolving into various niche categories,” offers Ghose of Mirchi. And as far as the branding bit is concerned: Existing players like Radio Mirchi and Radio City are playing on their well established brand names others like Big FM are positioning themselves as “mature channels, only for adults”. On the other hand, some players are placing their bets on regionalising their content.

‘undercapitalised’

According to an observation made by a recently appointed working group by Reserve Bank to investigate about the financial health of Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs), 15% of the banks (30 banks out of 217 banks taken as the sample) are short of the prescribed regulatory capital. Besides, the number of UCBs banks under the Grade IV category, which includes banks with capital adequacy of less than 50% of the prescribed limit and NPAs of more than 15% have also increased over the years.

‘Enemy of the State’

Elaborating on salience of the verdict, David Cole of the Humanitarian Law Project says, “Even in fighting terrorism, the President cannot be given a blank cheque to blacklist anyone he considers a bad guy or a bad group, and you can’t imply guilt by association.”

Civil liberties and freedom are what distinguished America from the former Soviet Union. If these twin pillars, sustaining the American dream, were to fall, very little would be left to differentiate between a totalitarian and free state.
